We may not have transporters yet, but what things from Star Trek's "future" are realities right now?

Love Their Works, Hate Their Views (ET)
People are wondering whether the World Fantasy Award should be changed given Lovecraft's views on race, and even Heinlein remains problematical for many readers. What do we do about authors whose political, religious, gender and racial views we find objectionable? Do we view their work solely on its own? Do we make allowances for cultural standards in past times or other places - as with Shakespeare?   If we hold to our standards, are we rejecting a good work unjustly?

What gets retained, and what gets permanently forgotten? Is the human brain even structured to handle this?

Mixing History and Magic (ET)
Naomi Novik's Temeraire books address this by keeping many elements of history familiar but dramatically changing others. In Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire Mysteries, paranormal entities have always been there, but they hid from ordinary humans for safety and therefore lacked the ability to influence the course of history. How do other authors of historical fantasy and urban fantasy balance the inherently world-changing nature of magic with the desire to layer it on top of the world we have?

The Not - so - Secret Fandom (AP)
It used to be that fandom was a secret room that only those in fandom knew about and played in, but now the door is wide open, with a big neon sign hanging above it. How do we feel now that mainstream media is aware of our playroom and parading our works to the general public? In worst cases, companies are actively stealing and relisting our creations. In best cases, our works are being officially published. What are the wows, as well as the woes, of fandom being in the public eye?

Confronting The Publishing Gatekeeper (AP)
Have you been collecting rejection slips on a science fiction or fantasy novel, but haven’t been able to figure out why? Do you have thick enough skin to take direct, honest, face-to-face critique? Bring your cover letter, the first 5 pages of your story, and your 1- or 2-page synopsis and get real-time feedback from the “Slushmaster General.” First-come, first-served, and volunteers only! If time permits, we may discuss short fiction; however, novels will have first priority. Learn what happens to manuscripts when you send them to a publisher, and how to make yours stand out … in the right way.

The Challenger and its Impact on Space (ET)
In January 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded off the coast of Cape Canaveral seventy-three seconds into flight. Witnessed live by millions of Americans in part because of the presence of a teacher on board, the disaster represented a major setback in the United States space program, and deeply affected the entire country. Come remember the seven astronauts lost during the tragedy, and discuss the impact it had on the American space program even to this day.

Holy Golden Anniversary, Batman! (AP)
2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the Batman TV series, a campy show that’s indelibly imprinted on many producers of pop culture today. Some critics (including NPR’s Glen Weldon) suggest all modern Batman interpretations (in the comics and on the screen) are still reacting to this show, but its influence clearly goes beyond just the Batman mythos. We’ll talk about the first great superhero TV show, including everything we loved about it, and all the things that make us cringe.

Gender and Gender-fluidity in the Genre (ET)
We used to get one ambiguously gay character...usually a queer-coded villain. We NEVER got anyone nonbinary (why would aliens even have a gender binary?). As LGBTQIA people are getting more recognition in society, we’re finally getting more queer characters in fiction. Let’s talk about the exploration of gender and sexuality in genre fiction, and how we’d like to see it expand.
