For a society that was so morality-conscious, it seems like there were a fair number of people (aristocrats even) who became interested in the occult around the end of the 19th century—performing séances, reading tarot, joining neo-pagan societies like the Golden Dawn, and so on. Why was occultism so popular, and how did the rest of society react to it?
